Since 2013, prolific Brisbane songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Shilling has collaborated with guitarist Daniel Booth to create an impressive collection of darkly introspective alt-rock arrangements. From its humble inception at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, the creative partnership has blossomed into an exciting new project: TRAILS. Combining hypnotic vocals, ethereal synths, intricate instrumental layering and driving rhythms, TRAILS deliver a powerfully distinctive signature sound.
Drawing inspiration from the towering riffs of Radiohead, the pop sensitivity of Everything Everything, the genre hopping sonic ornamentation of Yeasayer and the thunderous post rock rhythms of Foals, TRAILS delivers its own brand of densely dark alt rock. Tracks like "Borderline" showcase TRAILS’ affinity for infectious psych hooks, mesmerising synth washes and floating vocal harmonies. Recent offering "Alligator" evidences the band’s continued maturation, coupling their increasingly nuanced production with an ascendant progression and rich lyricism.
TRAILS’ lush sonic experimentation transfers seamlessly into a captivating 6-piece live show. Having spent several months in 2015 shaping their live sound, the group have played alongside a number of up and coming local acts and supported Australian rock mainstays The Superjesus on the Brisbane leg of their Australian tour. With the release of single “Borderline” followed swiftly by the release of their debut EP, “EP Ø“ in May, 2016 is shaping up to be another big year for the band. Coupling deft song craft and intricate arrangements with mesmerising live performances, TRAILS is one of the most exciting up-and-coming acts on the Brisbane music scene.
