Gold Coast-dwelling artist ROYES is an enigmatic soul. She has an honesty to her performances that magnetises. With a sound inspired by artists such as Nothing But Thieves, Jeff Buckley and Angus & Julia Stone, this 20 year old will have you pondering life's greatest mysteries and dreaming of faraway lands. Blown away by her debut at our NightQuarter concert series launch, we caught up with ROYES to delve into the deep end of what drives her passion for song.
Describe your music in three words
"Ambient Post Rock"
Which song changed your life?
"This is a tough one! I think there’s been a few songs over the past few years that could definitely fit this description for me, but I’d have to say that ‘Graveyard Whistling’ by Nothing But Thieves has to take the cake. I heard this song earlier last year and played it on repeat for ages. Still do haha. That album sort of changed the way that I thought about production for my own music."
Which local bands before you have been an inspiration?
"There are so many great local bands here on the Gold Coast, and I’ve been lucky enough to find inspiration in a lot of gigs lately. Many of the bands that come to mind are also either past or present SEED artists."
At the moment I'm really diggin'
"Nando’s for sure. I’m obsessed with the Chicken Hummusphere. 10/10 can recommend!"
ROYES is going to be hitting the stage again at our Brisbane launch with City Sounds at Queen St Mall this weekend, so be sure to hit up our events page for all the details.
